An urgency: wandering

Of rare beauty, Lorenzo Castore's photographic films, shot in the largest psychiatric hospital in southern Italy for Sogno #5 and in the monstrous and sensual Venice for W, reconnect with a primitive force, an urgency to translate the world into images.
Sing Your Song Boy reveals the complicity between Lorenzo and Michael Ackerman, their poetic and raw approach that draws its creative material from wandering.

A rare photographic film, an intuitive and sensitive approach...

Lorenzo Castore's enigmatic photographic film of rare beauty was directed in the largest psychiatric hospital in southern Italy. 220,000 square metres in the centre of Naples, where thousands of undesirables were interned from the end of the 19th to the end of the 20th century, sometimes unofficially. Thirteen years after its closure, Lorenzo Castore and Irene Alison, whose psychiatrist father worked at the hospital, accompanied by a group of actor-psychiatric patients, offer a poignant reinterpretation of August Strindberg's A Dream Play, shedding light on the remains of this ghostly institution.

A powerful combination of photographs and super-8 images.

In a subtle blend of still and moving images, Lorenzo Castore invokes the great themes of Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. An ageing man loses himself in the pursuit of beauty, youth and eroticism in a Venetian maze. A primitive force responds, the dance of a masked woman, Alice Raffaelli, between monstrosity and sensual embrace, the desire to live defies the fear of death.

Michael Ackerman & Lorenzo Castore | Sing Your Song Boy

A strongly inspired and poetic photography.

Michael Ackerman and Lorenzo Castore each assert a strongly inspired and poetic photography, made of wanderings, encounters and contemplation. Following the example of Anders Petersen, their “low-fidelity” photographic practice, which embraces camera shake, blur and grain, is opposed to technically perfect photography, and strives for high fidelity of emotion and feeling. India is the crucible of the effervescent human senses they seek to capture, and they have each drawn their images from it. In the closest proximity to life and death, beauty emerges. Massimo Nicolaci, director and photographer, himself a pupil of Ackerman and Castore, and also of Anders Petersen, built his film in India in the same way: as close as possible to wandering, to sharing creation, and as close as possible to the truth.
