Patrick Bouteloup and Didier Le Tumelin of CIRCAD welcome us to their workshop to learn more about the picture framer’s craft. It involves a whole lot more than simply mounting a photograph under glass. A framer must take the time to look at the images and listen to the artists: to find the ideal material, the colour that will bring out the photograph and, of course, its size. And the work does not end there: the framed photographs are taken to the exhibition venues then adjusted before being hung.

Synopsis

Patrick Bouteloup and Didier Le Tumelin of CIRCAD welcome us to their workshop to learn more about the picture framer’s craft. It involves a whole lot more than simply mounting a photograph under glass. A framer must take the time to look at the images and listen to the artists: to find the ideal material, the colour that will bring out the photograph and, of course, its size. And the work does not end there: the framed photographs are taken to the exhibition venues then adjusted before being hung.

What you will find in this film

A central aspect of an exhibition • A little-known profession • Two passionate and fascinating framers • The importance of the moulding’s colour • The frame’s role in the preservation of a photograph • Changing fashions in picture frames • The CIRCAD workshop • The process of picture framing • The great attention to detail at every stage of the process • The framer’s constant advice including on hanging the exhibition • How Patrick Bouteloup and Didier Le Tumelin started out

We’re passionate about what we do. When I think about the number of hours spent deciding on colours, on systems. It is more than a framer’s job, we even choose the colour of the walls, the format of the prints.
