Patrick Bouteloup and Didier Le Tumelin of CIRCAD welcome us to their workshop to learn more about the picture framer’s craft. It involves a whole lot more than simply mounting a photograph under glass. A framer must take the time to look at the images and listen to the artists: to find the ideal material, the colour that will bring out the photograph and, of course, its size. And the work does not end there: the framed photographs are taken to the exhibition venues then adjusted before being hung.

Synopsis

It involves a whole lot more than simply mounting a photograph under glass. A framer must take the time to look at the images and listen to the artists: to find the ideal material, the colour that will bring out the photograph and, of course, its size. And the work does not end there: the framed photographs are taken to the exhibition venues then adjusted before being hung.

What you will find in this film

A central aspect of an exhibition • A little-known profession • Two passionate and fascinating framers • The importance of the moulding’s colour • The frame’s role in the preservation of a photograph • Changing fashions in picture frames • The CIRCAD workshop • The process of picture framing • The great attention to detail at every stage of the process • The framer’s constant advice including on hanging the exhibition • How Patrick Bouteloup and Didier Le Tumelin started out

We’re passionate about what we do. When I think about the number of hours spent deciding on colours, on systems. It is more than a framer’s job, we even choose the colour of the walls, the format of the prints.
