Synopsis
She was honored with a retrospective at the MoMA during her lifetime. One of her works became the first photograph ever to appear on the cover of Artforum. She taught photographers such as Gregory Crewdson and Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and moved in the same circles as Ralph Gibson and Lee Friedlander. Yet despite a career spanning more than forty years, American photographer Jan Groover (1943–2012) has long remained on the margins of photographic history. A recent rediscovery of her work has shed new light on her singular body of images—black-and-white compositions and mesmerizing color photographs—that reveal her deep love for still life and staged imagery. More than anything, Groover dedicated her career to exploring the formal possibilities of photography, turning each image into a visual poem. After a life of success in the United States, the election of George W. Bush prompted her to leave the country and settle in France with her husband, in a house in the Dordogne region. There, in her home studio, she continued to work until her death in 2012. It is from that same house that her husband looks back on her life and practice, in an intimate and tender portrait that brings her compelling legacy back into focus.
