Synopsis
" Surrounded " depicts the daily life and resistance of the inhabitants of the Zapatista community of Nuevo San Gregorio in the Mexican state of Chiapas. Deprived of almost all their land by those they call "the invaders", they live under siege in their own village, surrounded by barbed wire. Despite regular intimidation and insults, they do not give up and continue to carry the hopes and ideals of the Zapatista movement.
Alexe Liebert's word
For Nuits Photo 2023, Alexe Liebert, the festival's artistic director, offered us a selection of photographic films from previous editions. She tells us why she chose this film...
Editing is not just a simple tool, and it goes far beyond the skills of the software we use. Editing is like writing, it's storytelling, it's unravelling the threads of your subject - however complex and vast - to tie them back together into a solid narrative with well-defined contours. With SURROUNDED, Juliette Martinez and Antoine Dibon have perfectly defined the boundaries of their subject, offering us a humanist film about a universal necessity: resistance.
