Lorenzo Castore, a primitive force

An urgency: wandering

In Lorenzo Castore’s work, blur, grain and movement form part of a photographic language in which sensory experience plays an essential role. Bodies, faces and places sometimes seem to lose their contours, as though photography were attempting to convey something of their presence beyond mere appearance. This instinctive visual language grows out of wandering, encounters and an intimate relationship with the territories through which the photographer travels.

The three films gathered here extend this approach into cinema. The remains of a former psychiatric hospital in Naples, the streets of Venice and journeys through India become settings for an encounter with memory, desire and death. In Sogno #5, the history of confinement meets the theatrical world of August Strindberg. W draws on Thomas Mann’s themes of fascination and mortality, while Sing Your Song Boy reveals the artistic affinities between Castore and Michael Ackerman, whose photography places chance and lived experience at the heart of their practice.

Together, these three works reflect an approach to photography in which formal experimentation and personal involvement are closely intertwined. The transition from still images to cinema opens up new narrative possibilities, while preserving the uncertainty, spontaneity and emotional intensity that characterise Castore’s work.
