Synopsis
Gian Paolo Barbieri staged some of the most memorable chapters in Italian fashion photography. When he began shooting for Novità, fashion images were still largely confined to a white backdrop — models reduced to silhouettes whose job was simply to “show the clothes”. Barbieri, an aesthete of restraint and right form, changed the rules. Without ever abandoning purity of line, he built sets worthy of Cinecittà, and the film makes clear that this was not a style he was asked to provide: it was a vision he imposed. At no point did he consider himself a compliant illustrator at the service of an editor’s brief. With a rich imagination and a sure eye, Barbieri went on to shape campaigns for years — Versace, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Armani, and countless others — while working for Vogue Italia. Here we meet an artist who calls himself a craftsman, mastering every element of the image: make-up, hair, styling, and above all a light that feels unmistakably cinematic. Even in his later, more personal nude series, his photographs retain that atmosphere of Italian film — a trace of dolce vita, threaded with an elegant eroticism.
